Why do so many buildings in rome have holes in them?

Rome focused on architectural design, so the more difficult and elaborate the building, the better. At that time, arches were both uncommon and difficult. When Rome mastered the center stone (middle stone of an arch,) they put arches everywhere, from bridges to Windows.
