How do you get fire in minecraft 1.2.5?

It shows a flame when it is smelting/cooking. Put raw meat, cobblestone, iron ore, sand etc in the top slot, and fuel (coal, charcoal, lava bucket, etc) in the lower slot, and the furnace will have a flame as long as it is active.
