The last individual to hold the title of Commodore in the United States Navy was Commodore John W. O'Grady, who served in the 1980s. The rank of Commodore was officially discontinued in 1985, with the Navy transitioning to a two-star Rear Admiral rank instead. Prior to its discontinuation, the Commodore rank had been used to denote senior captains temporarily assigned to command multiple ships or units.
