What war were the Marines formed?

The United States Marine Corps was established November 10, 1775 in Tuns Tavern located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania . Congress authorized two battalions of Marines. Their first raid was into the Bahamas in March of 1776. The raid was amphibious and was a complete success.
