this is how I would do it (substitution). there are other methods. let number of 2 point goals be x and number of 3 point goals be y 2x + 3y = 37 (1) x = y + 6 (2) substitute x = y + 6 into (1) 2(y+6) + 3y = 37 2y + 12 + 3y = 37 5y = 25 y = 5 substitute y = 5 into (2) x = 5 + 6 x = 11 substitute x = 11 and y = 5 into (1) 2(11) + 3(5) = 37 22 + 15 = 37 hope this helps not sure if its quite what you need.
