What links World War 1 and plastic surgery?

During ww1 there was a man called Dr Harold Gillies who had developed plastic surgery and was the pioneer of skin grafts. He mostly worked on soldiers from ww1 who had facial injuries (usually from gun shots) and for his war services, he was later knighted in the Birthday Honours list in June 1930.
