A Deacon may administer all of the sacrament of Extreme Unction with the exception of the Absolution of Sin following final Confession. In such cases where a priest or bishop is unavailable, the Deacon prays the Words "us" and "our" as appropriate where the Word "you" or "your" occurs in the normal pronouncement of absolution.

For example: A Priest might pronounce the Absolution as follows, "ALMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him; have mercy upon you; pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm and strengthen you in all goodness; and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.", and make the sign of the Cross over the penitent who is near death.

A Deacon would pray instead, "May Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him; have mercy upon us; pardon and deliver us from all our sins; confirm and strengthen us in all goodness; and bring us to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.", and would make the sign of the Cross over his own breast.
