Why doesn't The Count of Monte Cristo eat in front of others?

The Count does eat in front of others. He ate at the party he threw, remember? The Count does not eat at his enemies house (or he does not "partake food under the roof of M. de Morcerf") because it is a custom of some foreign land not to accept anything when at an enemies house.
