You can come up with different ways to get the job done and it will get done quicker then it would if you were doing it by yourself. Traditionally, 1+1=2, but with teamwork 1+1 can equal 3. People in general desire to be part of something, committed to a cause or a project, by creating environments that foster teamwork, individuals become part of something and "belong." The result of this is increased productivity and creativity. Two heads are indeed better than one, but not neccessarliy for the mere benefit of increased hands to do the work, but for the value of the diversity of ideas, opinions, and solutions that we may not have considered individually.
