When to Use Flagstone?

Flagstone, or what is sometimes referred to as simply “flag” is just a flat stone, which is mostly used to pave walkways, fences, roofing, and patiOS. In some instances, it is used to make a headstone, memorial, or other construction feature. The name comes from the Middle English Word, flagge, which simply refers to turf.

Flagstone is a layered and split sedimentary rock that is often placed along planes of bedding, and often flagstone resembles sandstone, which is typically made up of quartz and feldspar, typically the size of a grain. Basically, the major material that attaches to flagstone is made of calcite, iron oxide, and silica. The color of the material mostly comes from the cementing materials, but this can often vary from case to case. In most cases, the colors are blue and red, although there are certain exotic colors that also exist. Any area that contains sedimentary rocks that are in embankments, flagstones can be removed from those spaces, and some of the most obvious examples of where quarrying often takes place is in Pennsylvania and Arizona.

Many ceilings and walls of the thirteenth century were more common in European design, e.g., the Anglo-Saxons utilized many flagstones to make up the characteristics of floors, rooms, and additional structures. Some examples of buildings that contain flagstones are the Muchalls Castle and Lindisfarne Castle.

More specifically, the materials used for stone walls, which have been created thousands of years ago, are often made with flint, granite, limestone, and sandstone. But often what is the subject of debate is the overall construction of the walls and doors, and how various kinds of stones endure through the process of weathering, i.e., the ability to withstand the penetration that comes from water. Granite might be the best substance to be used against the corrosive process of weathering, as there are certainly instances when limestone can whither and chip away. Most large structures and buildings are made with extremely wide walls, and often those walls that are found on castles in Germany were created with the utmost durability in mind. Sometimes, a stone exterior is what is found on castle walls and doors, mostly with elements consisting of flagstone.
