Why does Bubba get into the army?

Bubba enlists in the army primarily to escape his life in Bayou La Batre and to serve his country. He sees military service as an opportunity for personal growth and to gain experiences beyond his fishing work. Additionally, joining the army allows him to pursue his dream of becoming a shrimp boat captain with the skills and benefits he hopes to acquire through his service.
