In a 1994 4 cylinder Ford Ranger the check engine light comes on once in awhile and then and goes out?

I have a 97 Ford Ranger, and when the engine light comes on for a while and then turns off. It is because i got bad gas somewhere. What I do is buy some fuel addative and fille the tank with it. Sometimes just one treatment works. Once in a while I have to use two treatments.
