How do you measure coarseness of abrasives?

Coarseness of e.g. sandpaper is measured in "mesh" (-> wikipedia), i.e. the particles fall through a screen with x meshes per inch. having to deduct the width of the wires separating the meshes the particle size will be strictly less than 1/x inches
