As they are currently measured, Mt. Everest is the tallest mountain on Earth - at a little over 29,000 feet above sea level. Mt McKinley (Denali), is somewhere around 18 or 19,000 feet high. Thus, Mt Everest is nearly two miles higher. In fact, most of the major mountains of the Himalaya and Karakoram range are much higher than any mountain in North America. The base camp at K2, for example, is at a higher elevation than the top of Mt McKinley.
