Why should you use your turn singals well in advance of a turn?

Why? To warn other drivers of your intention to make a turn. You want to give them plenty of time to prepare for the turn you are going to make and the sudden drop in speed of your car as you turn. Wait until the last minute to turn on your turn signals and you may be rear-ended by a driver not paying close attention or driving too fast.
