Who and when was the first living being on orbit?

The first living being in orbit was Laika, a Soviet space dog, who was launched on November 3, 1957, aboard the spacecraft Sputnik 2. Unfortunately, Laika's mission was one-way, as technology at the time did not allow for successful recovery of living organisms from orbit.
