Examples of modern, more subtle racism, might be the glass ceiling effect (the "invisible" differences in salary, position, or appraisal experienced by women and minorities), or the "positive" stereotypes such as Blacks are athletic, Asians are intelligent. Symbolic racism means believing that African American poverty and other problems are largely the result of lack of ambition and effort, rather than white racism and discrimination. The glass ceiling could be symbolic sexism if there is a belief that it does not exist, and women just don't try hard enough. Otherwise differences in pay and opportunitys for women is just sexism.
