Why did birds lay unfertile eggs from ddt?

DDT (or Deet) is a poison. it changes a cell's DNA and makes the cell do the wrong things. if a bird ingested (ate) some deet, it's sex cell's DNA may change and no longer produce the right proteins for making a baby.
