Unlike typical viral meningitis, Mollaret's may involve more severe symptoms and is often diagnosed through the analysis of cerebrospinal fluid, which shows elevated white blood cell counts and the presence of HSV DNA. While the condition can be distressing, most patients recover fully between episodes.
