Maha Shivratri, the great night of Lord Shiva, is one of the most auspicious Hindu festivals. Devotees observe fasts, chant mantras, and perform puja to seek blessings of health, prosperity, and spiritual upliftment. You can perform Shivratri puja at home in the following way:
- Purify Yourself & the Puja Space
- Take a bath early in the morning.
- Clean the puja room and altar thoroughly.
- Prepare the Shiva Lingam or Idol
- Place a Shiva Lingam or idol on a clean chowki with a white cloth.
- Keep offerings like bel leaves, water, milk, honey, fruits, flowers, incense, and a lamp ready.
- Invocation of Lord Shiva
- Light a diya and incense sticks.
- Meditate on Lord Shiva and chant “Om Namah Shivaya.”
- Abhishekam (Sacred Bathing of the Lingam)
- Offer water, milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar to the Shiva Lingam.
- After each offering, chant the sacred mantra “Om Namah Shivaya.”
- Finally, offer Gangajal to purify the lingam.
- Offering of Bel Leaves & Flowers
- Place fresh bel patra (three-leaf) on the lingam, as it is Lord Shiva’s favorite.
- Offer dhatura, akshata (rice grains), and white flowers.
- Chanting & Meditation
- Recite Shiva Chalisa, Rudram, or simply repeat the Panchakshari mantra.
- Sit in silence for a few minutes and meditate.
7.Perform Arti
- Sing Shiva arti with a lit camphor or ghee lamp.
- Circumambulate the lingam and seek blessings.
- Conclude the Puja
- Offer fruits, sweets, or prasad to Lord Shiva and distribute among family members.
- Continue your vrat (fast) with devotion.
Tip: Performing four rounds of puja during the night (keeping vigil) is considered highly auspicious on Shivratri.
