A canine is only pregnant for 62 - 65 days so trying to start it yourself is a bad idea. Even if the puppies come a day or two to early the results can be devastating. Now to answer your question... I know in humans a bath can relax you and get things going if you are close to your due date. The water also stimulates the milk glands which has the effect of causing contractions. I know some women will stimulate their breasts by expressing milk every few minutes to start the labour process and I can't see how it would be any different for a dog. This is the safest way to help bring on labour. However, I don't know anyone who is so desperate that they would play with their dogs nipples to get their dog to go into labour.
