In John's gospel, the "disciple whom Jesus loved" leaned on the breast of Jesus. Late in the second century, Ireneus identified the "disciple whom Jesus loved"as John, one of the twelve, as a result of which the fourth gospel became known as John's Gospel.

The scene in which the "disciple whom Jesus loved" leaned on Jesus is not mentioned in any of the earlier gospels, but if Ireneus was correct, then we could say that it was John.
