It depends. Most pirates must have treated them badly, though, for this was common for the time they lived in. He treated his wife amd children good and loved them with all his heart, until his entire family was killed and his wife got raped and killed afterwards by mercenaries; he then broke out in a furious rage and became a pirate. He became one of the cruelest pirates the world have ever had to face... The fact that he was well over 7ft tall made him all the more impressive (especially for the time).
