What should you do if where you live has no zip code?

I live in Ireland and am constantly having to deal with websites which say that a Zip Code, or a Postcode is a mandatory field. I have taken to putting "n/a" in these boxes and it usually works. Otherwise I just play around with combinations of letters and numbers until the site accepts something.
