What is a base camp?

A place set up to serve as a base of operations and starting point for an extended exposition or other long-term event. Eg. The medic stays at base camp on MT. EVEREST while climbers continue towards the summit. OR We can use our hotel room downtown as base camp between tours during this vacation.
