How did the Egyptians use the Nile River for transportation?

Basically it was used for transport - of finished goods, processed foodstuffs etc and the raw materials, seeds etc. Of course the water would be used to grow the crops etc. Given the river is over 4,000 miles long, flows through numerous countries and there are millions living close, the transport would be an essential part of these peoples lives.
