How did john newlands discover the periodic table?

Oh, dude, John Newlands didn't exactly "discover" the Periodic Table like stumbling upon buried treasure. He just noticed that when he arranged elements by atomic weight, every 8th element had similar properties. So, he came up with the Law of Octaves.
