Why did George De Mestral make veicro?

George de Mestral invented Velcro after observing how cockleburs stuck to his dog's fur during a walk in the Swiss Alps. Intrigued by the natural mechanism of adhesion, he examined the burs under a microscope and replicated their hook-and-loop structure using synthetic materials.
