Why are children's books so much cheaper than books for adults even when the quality is the same?

It used to be that publishers considered Children's Books less worthy than adult books and offered the authors less money. This has changed with J.K. Rowlings and Suzanne Collins selling large numbers of books and demanding more royalties. The average author makes $68,000.
