How do you measure government size?

The size of the government is not an absolute figure, it depends on other things.

The size of the government is best measured against the size of other things in the economy. So whilst the Military and the Elected Officials themselves are obvious, also included should be such things as Police, Schooling, Welfare; Services such as water, roads, sewage, and so on. Some of these will be provided by Central Government, and some by Local Government.

And this total may then be compared with the 'private enterprise' activity, such as Retailing, Manufacturing, Transport, Banking and so on. And you may be interested in the total money involved, or the number of folk involved.

AND in your community there are a lot of services that are provided for free - or at least without any money obviously changing hands. When your Mum makes your breakfast, when you go and cut Grandma's lawn, and so on.

From all of which, beware of those who come up with simple answers to such a complex question.
