What is the major conflict between evolution and creationism?

Conflict is a strong Word! It implies, at the very least, a robust debate about the origins of the world, yet it seems that outside the resources of creationists, there is very little discussion.

Certainly, few scientists are concerned with whether some believe in some form of special creation. Very few scientists, apart from Richard Dawkins, even discuss creationism. As a Professor for Public Understanding of Science (now emeritus), it was Dawkins' proper role to explain science against a creationist argument.

So, the conflict, if that is the right Word, is generated by creationists and kept alive in creationist publications and internet posts, to maintain awareness of their belief that God created the world more or less as we see it now, either over a period of billions of years or just a few thousand years.
