Why is Poseidon the god of water?

Poseidon didn't choose seas. Poseidon Zeus, and Hades drew sticks. Hades picked first and pulled the shortest stick, the underworld. Poseidon chose next and pulled the second shortest, which was water or seas. Zeus was left with the longest and most powerful.
