When did Santa Claus become part of Christmas?

Santa Claus is based on a real person; St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas lived sometimes around 300 A.D. The image we have of Santa Claus now comes mainly from 'Twas the Night Before Christmas' which was written by Dr. Clement C. Moore in 1822.
