In 1997, approximately 7,000 residents were evacuated from Montserrat due to the volcanic activity of Soufrière Hills, which began erupting in 1995. The eruptions caused significant destruction, particularly in the southern part of the island, leading to the evacuation of nearly the entire population of the capital, Plymouth. The crisis prompted a long-term displacement of many Montserratians.
