How do you know that your crossover cable is good?

You can use an ohmmeter to test the continuity of all wires.

Alternately, you can put it in place of a known working cross-over cable and see if the network connection still functions.

Remember that many modern network devices detect whether the cable is straight or cross-over, so perhaps you don't even need a cross-over.
