How many people were cured from polio?

Polio has been largely eradicated, with millions of people saved from paralysis and death due to vaccination efforts. While exact numbers of individuals cured are difficult to determine, the World Health Organization estimates that since the Global Polio Eradication Initiative began in 1988, over 18 million people are walking today who would have been paralyzed by the disease.
