How did some southerners try to maintain control over freed people?

after the civil war the southern states did try - quite successfully - to stop African American's from voting. one way was that they gave examinations to prove you were smart enough to vote. tey gave white people real easy tests and gave black people college level tests, most of which could not possibly answer.
