Why a donkey and an elephant?

The Donkey (Democratic Party) began with Andrew Jackson, when he was labled as a jackass, he took the term to heart. The Elephant (RepublicanParty) originated form a political cartoon created by Thomas Nast. The cartoon showed an elephant wearing the skin of a lion, scaring a zoo full of animals away, among the animals, a donkey.
