Could it be that Socrates' wife had a good reasons for nagging him?

Yes. If you think about what we know from history, Athenian men preferred the company of men. They were not reknown for having warm relationships with their wives or in fact high opinions of women in general. They married later in life for the sake of having children and married much younger women .

His wife Xanthippe is said to have had an argumentative nature. That should be prized by a philosopher and would not be criticized in a man. Philosophers have argued their opinions for thousands of years. She sounds like a woman ahead of her times, wanting to be heard instead of dismissed as inconsequential.

Socrates was a poor provider. He made very little money and seemed to be somewhat proud of that fact. He was satisfied with pursuing his truths. He was not often at home. It would seem he placed his wife and children on the back burner so he could pursue his dreams like many famous men have done throughout history. Actually, famous thinkers often need strong women to take care of business for them while they are absorbed with their own pursuits. There are rumors that he depended on money from her family for financial support. A difficult husband gives a wife license for a little nagging now and then and Xanthippe should not be condemned for having a lively spirit.

In fact, Socrates was so obnoxious and self absorbed, and he rattled the cages of the people in power to such an extent, that he was finally arrested and sentenced to death.
