A maiden name means the last name that a married woman had before changing it to her husband's last name. An example is before marrying Abraham Lincoln, his wife's name was Mary Todd (maiden name); upon marrying Mr. Lincoln, she became Mary Lincoln (married name). Today, this is usually an optional choice by someone when they marry.
