How many vertebrae in a rat skeleton?

students in my class are doing owl pellet dissections and we counted 54. We then went to this website (http://kentsimmons.uwinnipeg.ca/16cm05/16labman05/lb7pg5.htm) and it seems to be indicating 54 as well.
