Why was the growth of the middle class so important to the rise of European nation-states?

During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, kings in Europe struggled to win more power. Gaining minitary strength helped them do this. The financial support they received from the growing middle class enabled them to build up armies, navies, and stockpiles of weapons...etc..
