How did Guantanamo come in our possession?

Guantanamo Bay came under U.S. control following the Spanish-American War in 1898. The Treaty of Paris, which ended the war, granted the U.S. a permanent lease on the naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The U.S. has maintained its presence there since, using it primarily for military purposes. In 2002, it became widely known as a detention facility for terrorism suspects after the events of September 11, 2001.
