There were several, historical Saints named Nicholas- including one from Russia who, just so happened to be the Richest man in the world- there were rumors he tried to buy out a prominent New York Toy store in the immediate pre-War I era but this is doubted. Much of the Santa Claus legend was developed by cartoonists such as Thomas Nast. Coca-Cola played a role and keystoned the basically red and white costume ( their colors). The song about Rudolph the Red-Nosed reindeer was written by one Johnny Marks as part of a toy-catalogue promotional by Montgomery Ward- the story dated from l939 the song came out later. In the poem ( the Night Before Christmas) there are only 8 tiny reindeer ( it is implied they have size-altering powers like Brick Bradford"s Time top) which is how Santa and company remain invisible.- this superpower not to prominent with modern clausism. Rudolph is not in the roster in the Clement Moore poem so it goes.
