What did the US want to accomplish in World War 2?

It wanted the nations of the world to respect the territorial integrity and soverignty of each other, to support non-interference in the internal affair of each other, to support equality and commercial opportunity and finally to maintain the "status quo". It sounded simple but the League of Nations couldn't do it.
