What is the impact of depleting natural resources on international peace and security?

If a nation has less resources, but growing needs due to an increasing population, then it suffers a major shortfall.

If it cannot get the resources domestically, and trade is strained or unprofitable, or unable to meet requirements, it's only hope of survival and security is to claim resources from others.

It could be said that America's failure to meet its energy needs domestically, and its understandable unwillingness to depend entirely on Middle Eastern governments, caused its invasion of former suppliers and claim over their oil.
