Why do almond shells have hole in them?

Tree nut shells are textured to help them hold onto the fruit that they are inside when they develop. Some nut fruits are fleshy and are removed either by letting them rot or mechanically, others are vestigial and only very thin falling away on their own as the nut ripens.
