Why did the Nazis want to keep their crimes a secret?

the full range of the Holocaust was kept secret until the end of the war, but the world knew that Germany was killing Jews on a large scale within a year.

The problem was that the world did not want to know (which encouraged the Germans to continue), otherwise they would have had to consider doing something about it.
