A stalactite forms from the deposition of minerals, primarily calcium carbonate, as mineral-rich water drips from the ceiling of a cave. As the water drips, it leaves behind tiny deposits of calcium carbonate, which accumulate over time. This process occurs slowly, often taking thousands of years, resulting in the characteristic icicle-shaped formations. Stalagmites, which form on the cave floor, arise from the dripping water that falls from stalactites, allowing for a complementary growth process.
