I don't know if it's true, but I've heard (and read) from numerous sources that if the soil was warm enough to sit comfortably on the ground with naked buttocks, then it was time to plant. This actually makes some sense, because the typical Native American crops were corn (maize), beans, and squash, all of which need relatively warm soil in which to germinate.
